Cleaning Warning Signs and Next Steps
Soot, creosote and nesting material can restrict a chimney and may require cleaning. A professional inspection helps determine the condition of accessible components and the appropriate maintenance.
Smoke in the Room Requires Evaluation
Smoke entering your home is a warning sign, but it does not by itself prove the chimney is clogged. Possible causes include an obstruction, damper problems, a cold flue, wind-related downdrafts, inadequate air supply or pressure imbalances. Cleaning alone may not correct the cause. Stop using the fireplace until the problem is evaluated. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you suspect a fire, leave the home and call 911.

Report visible deposits, nesting material, unusual odors, loose components or a change in how the fire burns. Odors may involve creosote, moisture or airflow; a slow-burning fire can also involve wet fuel or inadequate combustion air. Do not climb onto the roof or reach into the flue to investigate.
When requesting service, mention whether you burn wood or use gas logs, when the chimney was last serviced, and whether smoke appears at startup or throughout use. Photos taken safely from the hearth may help explain your concern, but cannot establish the condition of concealed components.
Inspection and Cleaning Have Different Purposes
Arrange a chimney inspection generally once a year, with cleaning and repairs when needed. The appropriate cleaning frequency depends on fuel, use and the condition found. A sweep removes accessible deposits; it does not guarantee that every venting or structural problem has been corrected.

Chimney Cleaning Questions
Does a smoking fireplace always need sweeping?
Smoke can have several causes. Stop using the fireplace and arrange an evaluation; sweeping alone may not solve a damper, airflow or structural problem.
Can an odor tell me how much creosote is present?
No. Tell the office about the odor and when it occurs, but do not use smell alone to decide whether the chimney needs cleaning.
Should a gas-log fireplace still be inspected?
Yes. Gas logs still require a suitable fireplace and venting system. Describe your equipment when scheduling so the appropriate inspection can be arranged.
What happens if damage is found?
Our team explains visible findings and recommended next steps. Additional repair work is separate from sweeping and requires your approval. Concealed concerns may require further evaluation.
