Preparing Your Chimney for Winter

Before Fort Worth’s colder weather arrives, review your fireplace’s service history and operating instructions. This guide is a planning aid; it cannot establish that a particular chimney is ready for use.

Schedule a Professional Inspection

Arrange an annual chimney inspection and cleaning or repairs as needed. Tell the technician about smoke indoors, water entry, unusual odors, previous chimney fires or changes to the appliance. A flashlight view from the hearth cannot reveal the entire flue, hidden damage or required clearances. Do not climb onto the roof or attempt to remove a suspected nest or blockage yourself.

Address Cleaning, Damage and Cap Needs

Creosote is combustible, and deposits need professional evaluation. Sweeping does not repair cracks, damaged liners or appliance defects. Ask for an explanation of the condition and proposed work before approving repairs. A properly selected cap can help limit rain, debris and animal entry, but it does not guarantee freedom from blockages or chimney fires. Cap selection and installation must suit the chimney system and manufacturer’s requirements.

Follow the Instructions for Your Fireplace

Use only the fuel approved for your appliance. For wood-burning systems, use dry, seasoned firewood rather than relying on a fixed number of months alone. Follow the manufacturer’s damper and glass-door instructions; a screen and glass doors are not interchangeable operating controls. Keep combustible belongings at least three feet from the fireplace and observe any greater required clearance. Maintain smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms according to their instructions.

Stop Use When a Problem Appears

Smoke entering the room is a warning that needs evaluation, but it does not identify a single cause. Stop using the fireplace until the problem is assessed. If you suspect an active chimney fire or a carbon-monoxide emergency, leave the home and call 911 from outside. Do not relight the fireplace to test it or wait for a routine service appointment.

Ask Cindy about a chimney sweep with visual inspection ($169.99 + tax) or inspection-only service ($129.99 + tax). Tell her if a Level 2 inspection, a prior chimney fire, an appliance change or a repair concern is involved so she can confirm the appropriate visit and pricing. Additional repairs require separate approval.

Let the fireplace cool completely, avoid lighting a fire before the appointment and clear belongings from the work area. Tell the office about access restrictions or special household needs in advance. Our office will confirm the service, address and appointment time; an online request does not automatically reserve a visit.

Should I wait for the first cold night to schedule?

Plan ahead of regular fireplace use. Ask Cindy about available appointments and describe any current symptoms. This page does not promise a same-day visit or a specific seasonal wait time.

Do I need an inspection if I barely used the fireplace?

An annual inspection remains useful because time, weather, animal activity and component condition can matter even with limited use. Cleaning depends on the condition found; low use alone does not verify that the system is ready.

Does a chimney cap replace regular maintenance?

No. A suitable cap can help reduce entry of rain, debris and animals, but the chimney and fireplace still need inspection and any indicated cleaning or repairs.

What if I moved in and do not know the service history?

Tell Cindy that the history is unknown and whether the appliance or fuel type has changed. Ask about the appropriate inspection before using the fireplace; do not assume an ordinary visual visit covers every concealed condition.
