A top-sealing chimney damper is installed at the top of a masonry flue and is operated by a cable or chain connected to a handle inside the firebox. When the fireplace is not being used, the damper closes against its sealing surface to help reduce outside drafts, conditioned-air loss, moisture entry and animal intrusion. Before installation, the flue opening, chimney crown, operating cable and fireplace configuration should be evaluated to determine whether the damper will fit and operate correctly. A top-mounted damper is not appropriate for every chimney or fireplace, and it must remain fully open whenever the fireplace is in use.
