What We Evaluate for a Custom Chimney Cap
Some chimney tops require a custom cap because of unusual flue sizes, multiple flues, limited mounting space, or other nonstandard conditions. Fort Worth Chimney Sweeps evaluates the chimney-top layout and recommends a cap configuration that fits the existing system while maintaining appropriate clearance and ventilation.
Flue Configuration: We evaluate the number, size, shape, and spacing of the flue openings so the chimney cap can be properly sized for the existing chimney-top layout.
Chimney-Top Dimensions: We measure the available mounting area and surrounding chimney-top conditions to determine whether a standard cap will work or a custom-sized option is more appropriate.
Clearance and Ventilation: The cap must provide appropriate clearance around the flue openings and allow the chimney system to vent as designed. We consider these requirements when determining the cap size and configuration.
Weather, Debris, and Animal Exposure: We consider how the chimney top is exposed to rain, leaves, debris, and possible animal entry when recommending an appropriate cap design and screening configuration.
Choosing Between a Custom Cap and a Chase Cover
The round termination above a factory-built chimney and the metal cover spanning the top of its chase serve different purposes. The termination protects the chimney opening; the chase cover sheds water from the enclosure. Rust or open seams in the cover may call for chase-cover work even when the cap above it looks intact.
We identify the chimney system before selecting a cap. Factory-built fireplaces can require an approved termination for that system, so a wide custom cap is not an automatic replacement for an existing round termination. If water is entering, the evaluation also considers the crown, cover, masonry and other possible entry points before recommending cap work.

A standard cap fits common flue sizes and mounting conditions. A custom cap is measured and configured for unusual dimensions, multiple flues, limited mounting space or other nonstandard chimney-top conditions.
What photos help Cindy prepare for a custom-cap evaluation?
A ground-level view of the whole chimney and any existing close-up of its top help us understand the layout. Include what you have noticed, such as a missing cap, rust, animal entry or water inside the fireplace. Use photos you can obtain from a safe location; do not climb onto the roof for this request. Photos help us plan the visit, but final sizing requires measurements.
Can one custom cap cover multiple flues?
Sometimes. The number, size, shape and spacing of the flues, along with required clearances and ventilation, determine whether one properly designed cap can serve the chimney top.
Can a wide custom cap replace the round cap above my metal chimney pipe?
The fireplace and chimney system must be identified first. A factory-built system may require a specific approved termination. We check those requirements before recommending a replacement instead of choosing a cap by appearance alone.
Why might water still enter when a cap is already installed?
A cap shields the flue opening, but it does not repair a cracked crown, a rusted chase cover, open masonry joints or defective flashing. Tell us whether the water appears during rain, where you see it, and whether rust stains or damp masonry are visible. Those details help focus the evaluation; they do not establish the cause by themselves.
How is a custom chimney cap priced?
Custom-cap pricing depends on the measured dimensions, flue arrangement, material, mounting method and installation access. A standard-cap price does not apply automatically to a custom fabrication. We explain the proposed scope and written price before the work is approved.
