Chimney brick and mortar are porous and can absorb wind-driven rain. When the masonry is suitable for treatment, a breathable water-repellent product can help reduce liquid-water absorption while still allowing water vapor within the masonry to escape.

Before treatment, Fort Worth Chimney Sweeps evaluates the visible condition of the brick, mortar joints, chimney crown, flashing and other possible water-entry points. Cracked masonry, missing mortar, damaged crowns, flashing problems or an inadequate chimney cap may require repair before a water repellent is applied.

Masonry water sealing is not a substitute for structural repairs and cannot stop every source of chimney leakage. The recommended work depends on where the moisture is entering and the visible condition of the chimney.
